The mini-series L'Īle (French for 'the island') is about the survivors of the crew of a European sail-ship who end up stranded on a small island together with an about equal number of Polynesian natives. They start two separate settlements, but as only the Polynesian have women, a lottery assigns a few to white men. Soon the two sides grow from culturally uneasy rivalry to jealous and hate which can't fail to spawn violence; the only white sailor who proves a moral, fair gentleman, a young lieutenant without racist prejudice against the brave 'noble savages', is even in danger of being rejected by both sides as the conflict escalates to a miniature civil war... |
